Who Says Ceramics and Performance Art Don't Mix?

We were talking about conceptual and contemporary art in Art Theory Seminar - and, inevitably, the discussion turned to what is good and bad conceptual art and why. Now, one might say that conceptual performance art + clay=mud. And one would be right.

The artist JJ McCracken makes the strongest and most eloquent case that performance art and clay does not necessarily equal mud. I wander to her website periodically and wallow in the senseless vapidity of my own work. You can too -> just visit www.jjmccracken.com

Seriously, I love her pieces - especially Stasis and the Hunger Project Performance. The Hunger Project reads like an Austrian opera set.

  1. It's hard to get much info about him but Hoon Lee is also doing some cool conceptual stuff in Ceramics- he has a blog at http://hoonlee.blogspot.com/

  2. Her work is nice, makes me wonder what it would be like to have been there instead of seeing pictures. I guess that's a good indicator of success for performance art, if it makes ME want to have been there. Thanks for sharing.
